We were finally going to Alaska. For years my wife and I had heard the stories, conjured the images and dreamed of exploring the last great frontier before it became yet another victim of ‘modernization’.

Lance Mackey of Fairbanks became the first musher to win four straight Iditarod’s when he completed the race in 8 days 23 hours and 59 minutes, the second fastest time ever. Martin Buser of Switzerland holds the all time record when he finished in 8 days 22 hrs and 46 minutes in the 2002 race. Mackey joins the late Susan Butcher, Jeff King, Buser and Doug Swingley as the only mushers who have won four of the legendary races. Only Rick Swenson has won five. Mackey success keeps one of the first families of mushing in the forefront of the classic run that draws world wide attention. His brother Rick won in 1983 and his father Dick won in 78 in what is likely to remain the closest race of all time. Racing down the home stretch on the historic streets of Nome he won by just one second over Swenson.
